History of the museum of contemporary art

Although the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in 1977 by Queen Farah Pahlavi, the origin of the gathering of contemporary art objects in Iran began in the 1940s, when the Faculty of Fine Arts opened. Thereafter there was a great movement of artists between Iran and the West, especially Europe, for learning and improving artistic skills. At the end and only two years before the revolution, Queen Farah Pahlavi opened the museum to collect the best modern objects and pieces.

Contemporary art museum architecture

Architect Kamran Diba designed the mysterious building of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, drawing inspiration from traditional Iranian architecture. Although from the outside you can see a mixed architecture of modernity and tradition but the interior is a new work based on contemporary art. The interior and exterior of the contemporary art museum building is based on Persian art having elements such as wind collectors or “Badgir” on the facade and other elements such as Hashti (hall in Persian architecture), Chaharsoo (small four-way building ) and etc., in interior design. It is interesting to know that most of the contemporary art museum is underground. From the starting point the route begins on the spiral walkway through which you can go to other levels and visiting the galleries on the walkway.
