The ancient underground city of Noushabad is a masterpiece from more than 1500 years ago and it's located in Noushabad city 14 kilometers north of the center of Kashan. Noushabad is located in a desert area but surprisingly this city originally grew around a fresh water spring, credited with supplying delicious and crystal clear water. The underground city of Noushabad is usually offered to tourists as part of Kashan tourist attractions like Borujerdi House, Tabatabaei House, Agha Bozorg Mosque and etc.
Noushabad residents for centuries have used existing tunnels and chambers to shelter from invasions. These tunnels were considered a masterpiece of the Sassanid era 1500 years ago. It is imagined that during many invasions the invaders found the city without a single inhabitant although all that population in this 3-level underground city and with a depth of up to 18 meters underground. Although shelter from wars and invasions is one of the reasons these tunnels were built but archeologists consider that the original purpose of the underground city excavation has been to provide air conditioning during the summer since the tunnels have been dug around the well. These high-tech and intelligence techniques have been unknown to the world until 2006 when one of the residents found this hidden city by surprise when trying to dig a well on their property.
Due to the possible flood in case the excavation goes further for the total discovery of the Noushabad tunnels, we currently know that this underground city consists of three floors (levels) and 4 to 18 meters deep. The height in tunnels and chambers is considered sufficient for the average human height, although in some places the height is decreased by half. The opening to the tunnels was done through different points, some inside the houses, others at various meeting points and some on the outskirts of the city and all well hidden from people outside Noushabad. In addition to the aforementioned, when invading the city, the enemies were in a dangerous situation since, due to the architecture of the Noushabad tunnels, the curvilinear passages facilitated the ambush of the enemies and the false accesses worked to catch the enemies without the rest find it.
